Not only does this article include solutions recommended by Apple but also workarounds proven effective by Apple users.

Part 1. What is iPhone/iTunes Error 9?

iPhone/iTunes error 9 is a common Apple error code prompted when you are using iTunes to update or restore your iPhone or iPad.

As described on the Apple support page, this error has something to do with the connection between your device and Apple servers. Chances are your device unexpectedly disconnects from iTunes during the updating or restoring process.

Apart from error 9, error 4013, error 4014, and error 4005, all occur due to a similar reason. Therefore, you can also fix these errors using the following solutions.

Part 2. Why Does it Say iPhone Could Not Be Restored Error 9?

Knowing the reasons why error 9 occurred to your iPhone can for sure help in solving it. As mentioned above, a failed connection between iPhone and iTunes can lead to error 9. Now let’s explore what the connection issue results from.

Below are the possible reasons summarized by people who’ve had this issue.

  • Faulty USB cable.
  • Faulty USB port.
  • Corrupted network settings.
  • Security software & Firewall blockage.

Part 3. iPhone Error 9 Solutions

Quick Solutions to iPhone Error 9

First of all, we should not make things complicated. Sometimes you can solve the error effortlessly using the easiest and seemingly impossible methods. These tips and tricks are not doomed to work 100% but eventually, I see no reasons not to try them first.

  1. Make sure both the USB cable and port are in good condition. If you find the USB cable or cable has a poor contact problem, try using a different USB cable and plug it into another USB port.
  2. Make sure the USB cable is tightly plugged into your iPhone and the computer.
  3. Remove any third-party battery packs or cases and directly connect your iPhone to the computer.
  4. Disconnect other devices from the computer except for your iPhone.
  5. Restart your iPhone and computer to avoid unknown software bugs. Performing a restart can solve 99% of errors and this general rule also applies here.
  6. Connect to a stable and fast WiFi network. Discontinuous network conditions can also interrupt the connection between iPhone and iTunes.
  7. Temporarily disable third-party security software, firewall, and virtualization apps in case they mistakenly block the communication between you and Apple servers.
  8. Update iTunes to the latest version.
  9. Update your computer to the latest version.
  10. Use another computer if your computer couldn’t tell your device to restore.

Still see the error 9 prompt from iTunes? Then you have to try the solution recommended by Apple.

Official Solution to iPhone Error 9 (100% Work)

Apple has given a uniform solution to all iPhone update and restore errors, including iPhone error 9.

Honestly speaking, its official solution has the highest success rate but also comes with a fatal drawback – data loss.

You may end up losing all your iPhone data using this solution so it’s recommended to back up your iPhone before you proceed.

After that, you can restore most of your iPhone data from a recent iTunes or iCloud backup. But inevitably some data will be permanently deleted.

Without further ado, let’s see how to do it:

Step 1. Make sure you have the latest iTunes version or macOS installed.

Step 2. Force restart your device.

Step 3. Connect your device to the computer using a USB cable.

Step 4. Choose the Update option first and see whether it works. If not, reconnect your iPhone to the computer and proceed with the Restore option this time.

  1. I have only had my iPhone 13 Max Pro x 5 months. Battery health is 99%. No issues ever until yesterday morning when I plugged it into my work computer(a Lenovo icore 5) using the usb-c lightning port cable, and ever since has restarted itself every 2-5 minutes ever since. With a lot of work I got it into recovery mode and on itunes(current updated version). It attempts to restore to factory but gets error 9 at about 80% through updating. Ive turned off most of my PC’s(an HP laptop) security settings. I have not changed the registry for windows defender however. Could that be the issue?

    • Hi Ryan,

If you are still experiencing this issue, I would recommend either changing a computer or trying iPhone repair software, as I mentioned in the article.
